Inauguration

The Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, inaugurated the Cazombo photovoltaic solar park — in Cazombo, the capital of the province East Moxico — in the presence of the provincial governor, Crispiniano dos Santos, and the Secretary of State for Energy, Arlindo Carlos.

The inauguration ceremony carries great significance for communities in this eastern region of Angola, who now benefit from vital modern energy infrastructure.

The Cazombo photovoltaic solar park will supply electricity to approximately 136,000 people, providing clean, affordable, and environmentally friendly energy. The facility has an installed capacity of 25.4 MWp, supported by a 75.264 MWh lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and includes around 40,320 solar panels.

This robust and modern system will prevent 37,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually and save an estimated 9.7 million litres of fuel per year, reducing State expenditures by approximately 4.5 billion kwanzas.

The project includes the MV and LV distribution network, composed of 84 transformers (30/0.4 kV) with 250 kVA, 160 kVA, and 100 kVA ratings; 461 MV concrete poles; 43 km of MV conductors; 9,920 fibre and concrete LV poles; 272 km of air-bundled LV cables; 600 lighting fixtures; and 18,125 house connections with ready boards.

Dar supported the project through design review and construction supervision services, helping deliver infrastructure built to high standards of safety, reliability, and with quality the community can depend on.

Now delivered to the residents of Cazombo and surrounding areas, this solar park forms part of a broader programme of solar parks under construction across eastern Angola, with ongoing works in the provinces of Bié, Malanje, Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Moxico, and East Moxico — covering a total of 60 localities. Through this ambitious initiative, the Government of Angola aims to bring electricity to more than 1 million inhabitants of the eastern region, decisively transforming their quality of life.

The Cazombo solar park represents a strategic asset for the development of East Moxico, bringing not only electricity but also sustainable growth to local communities. It expands access to goods and services, stimulates various economic sectors, attracts investment, and ultimately enhances the dignity and well-being of citizens.

Employment opportunities are expected to increase significantly as improved energy availability facilitates the creation of new businesses, encourages entrepreneurship, and directly attracts investment — driving a demand for a skilled workforce and delivering tangible and lasting benefits to the local populations.

This programme, which is advancing the construction of modern electrical systems in eastern Angola through the establishment of solar parks — including the newly inaugurated Cazombo facility — remains a top priority for the Angolan Executive. It aligns with the Government’s strategic goals, particularly the commitment to improving the living conditions of all Angolans.
