Dar al-Handasah has received recognition for its Green Apple Day of Service Program from the Emirates Green Building Council (GBC), a leading council established in 2006 and dedicated to advancing green building principles for protecting the environment and ensuring sustainability in the United Arab Emirates.
The Green Apple Day of Service is an initiative by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), one that brings volunteers from around the world together to host local service projects that make schools healthier and more sustainable.
For the past seven years, volunteers from Dar have been holding Green Apple Day of Service events at different schools, as part of their commitment to transforming schools into greener and more sustainable learning spaces.
In 2017 alone, 77 volunteers from Dar Beirut and Dar Pune conducted awareness campaigns in 10 schools, impacting over 1000 students and encouraging them to lead greener lives. In 2018, Dar Cairo, Dar Amman and Dar Dubai joined the ever expanding movement. One of Dar Dubai’s first contributions was holding a Green Apple Day of Service at the SABIS-International School of Choueifat- Dubai, an event that engaged over 200 students of different age groups.
Emirates GBC proclaimed the SABIS event a “first for the UAE” and lauded Dar al-Handasah for its role as an active member of the Global Coalition for Green Schools, a coalition that aims to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn in a green school.
In its newsletter, published on the 1st of November, Emirates GBC saluted project lead Ibrahim Kronfol and Dar’s dedicated volunteers for their attempts to use highly interactive workshops to raise awareness of sustainable development and green building among school-age students.
