The project
The Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre was established by the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation, whose mission is to provide truly exceptional medical care in order to promote the health and wellbeing of the people of Egypt, the broader Middle East, and Africa and to improve health outcomes for underprivileged and vulnerable individuals, by offering state-of-the-art healthcare services, free of charge. The Foundation also nurtures generations of upcoming Egyptian doctors, nurses, scientists, and researchers by providing specialized training services that meet the highest international standards and contributing advanced basic science and applied research facilities that promote biomedical research in Egypt.
Dar successfully developed the detailed architectural design as well as the full engineering design of this landmark project. In line with the Foundation’s mission, the design priorities providing a soothing, healthy, and sustainable environment that can enhance the physical and spiritual well-being of patients and their families. Lush green landscaping surrounds the hospital, providing an exceptional ambiance that is crowned by a distinctive and expansive artificial lake on the East Side. The hospital’s in-patient wings are also strategically designed to help patients recuperate physically and mentally by offering panoramic views, not only of the lake but also of the Giza Pyramids.
Customized to accommodate Egypt’s hot and arid climate, the design also stipulates exceptional sustainability performance and safeguards a healthy environment that enhances the wellbeing of patients, visitors, and care providers alike. Dar’s priority included incorporating innovative systems and applying sustainable engineering measures to augment energy efficiency and effectively meet environmental targets and sustainability goals. Thanks to these measures, the project exceeded the targeted LEED Silver Certificate scoring for design items and, provided the contractor achieves the remaining construction credits, is anticipated to earn a LEED Gold Certificate.
As designed, the Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre includes a 300-bed hospital serving children and adults with 124 intensive care unit beds and 180 in-patient beds. The hospital is fully equipped with five state-of-the-art operating theatres as well as one hybrid operating theatre, four catheterization labs, outpatient clinics, an emergency department, and administration offices.
Beyond the main hospital function, the programme also comprises a research hub and innovation centre, complete with dedicated laboratories adopting the industry’s latest technologies, in order to power the project’s ambitious research agenda.
The project facilities also include an energy centre building serving the compound as well as a surface car park that accommodates about 460 cars, for visitors and staff. Collectively, the project comes in with a built-up area of around 85,000 m2.
The plot where the project is situated comprises 35.67 Feddans, 27 of which are dedicated for the Medical Centre and the remaining set aside for future expansion plans.
